wow.ive noticed lately there has
been high pings , warp , and lag.

Is there something going wrong?

Me and a kid got in a fight cause of the ping

we finally stopped fighting but
i still dont know why his ping keeped going
up and down.

Is there a solution to this or what?

maybe its an error with something everyone downloaded.

OK.......

I admit it.......Im paranoid........it goes with my line of work.... smilies/biggrin.gif

Veng, Opp, Sep, please read my posting in Comments and Suggestions titled:
"Alert, Keep your eyes open"

I think the problem I discovered may be affecting a significant number of computers.
I dont know when or how, but I dont visit places that are prone to problems....so....
it could happen to anybody.

Guys I am with Zathrus on this. I did the same test he did. And I noticed before laoding bz2 and conenctin to gamespy network that I had no hits on ports other then what should have been getting hits. But when I loaded bz2 and went into multi-shell I got 5 hits within 20 secs. On multiple ports. I think Gamespy may be compromised like Zathrus suspects. I am attempting to log the invading Ip's and neotrace them. BTW to note: The Ip's of the intruding packets ARE NOT the same Ip as the game server. Something once you connect to gamespy is scannig our comps. Not too much a problem for the 56k'rs as hackers would take forever to get something from us. But the cable/dsl guys may ahve something to worry about. Everyone do me a favor. Do an experiment here with me. Do as Zathrus did and run bz2 behind some kind of firewall that logs Ip's and log the intruding packets of any Ip that is not the game hosts Ip. Then post the Ip's in a memebrs only forum of bac plz. I will neotrace em and see where are little investigation leads us...

I have a strange feeeling our comps are being used as some kind of server for something when connected through gamespy. Just my thoughtz....

Reply at ur convienence...

WASSUP OPP!:

You still can have ZA on when you host a game...Just set it to medium for both local and internet and the other players' comps will now ping to you. If you don't host then just leave it on high. Until then...

PEACE OUT!,

Yes I believe this is possible Riker.

The "Virus" I discovered is called the
"mirc mimic".
This virus is used to "link" on-line computers together for "denial of service" attacks.

Combined with the discovery of almost continuous bombardment of "ICMP" packets makes me suspect that a clandestine network was trying to link with me. My firewall stopped it. and logged the hits.

It is too coincidental that at about the same time everyone starts complaining about a major increase in lag & warp these things are discovered.

It is important to note that I run "active shield" (by McAfee) on my computer. It has a very good track record. Despite this, the virus was not detected until I did an "online scan" at the McAfee site. (essentially allowing their server to scan my system)

I also have to concur.

Sometimes when exiting BZ2 my connection continues to sendand receive data until i disconnect.

I dunno who i am sending and receiving data to either.

I use Windows XP, home edition.
I have not had problems..
I suspect Gamespy at this point.

Venge I tried ZA on medium and all I had was a slow slide show and had to quit but everyone else was ok!!

this is getting spooky for a lot of game players
even trooper in cs had problems , his ping went higher than usually . are u sure its a virus maybe?

well if it is , then i havent got it yet , my pings have been fine

I'm sure there's no conspiracy.

I just assumed I hadn't been cleanly exited from the gamespy server.

The internet is constantly getting more and more traffic so as a whole it will slow down.

Also say one of the main routing pc's is off-line. The beauty of the net is it will automatically find the next quickest route and there will be no breakdown of service. But the alternate route may be longer, and double your ping.

Don't let yourself get worried. Have you seen the next version of the internet, cleverly named internet2.

It allows you transfer a whole cd in about 2 seconds :).

300 Meg per second. In future you will buy games on-line, download the iso (in 2 seconds) and drag it onto your cd-rom icon to automatically burn it.

Yup... internet2.. its allready out there ,, but will take a long way before it comes to ur homes .. :(
Though if you got an internet2 connection like i had when i worked at hospital does not mean it goes fast ... u may have the connection .. but do all other !!! NOPE ..
But atleast it isnt you that slows stuff down hehe :)
as for the game spy thing .. u think we could make a report to gamespy ??
I think they will be able to scan there own servers more suffuciantly then we with our little firewalls :)

l8r ... !

gamespy sucks. it is slower than molasses going uphill with a headwind. most of the time. the rest of the time, there's just no headwind.

to gamepsy smilies/finger.gif !!!!!!!!!!!11

hehe,

Showoff, there is no reason to be worried.
The only reason I got infected, is I had turned my firewall off awhile to reduce lag. smilies/stupid.gif

Even with no firewall, unless your computer has an "IRC" communitcator, the "mirc mimic" virus cant use your computer. So.......a simple solution for me was....DELETE mIRC. smilies/biggrin.gif

The concern I have been expressing is not about getting infected. It is about the possibility that the gamespy network is being used (and some of the computers using it) in denial of service attacks. IF true, it would cause exessive lag on everyone. Also, the idea that someone MIGHT be doing this REALLY PISSES ME OFF!!! smilies/mad.gif

Please keep in mind that none of this has hard proof...yet. It is possible that all of this is a big coincidence. So, smilies/tongue.gif Continue having fun smilies/nut.gif

However, Zamial's issue about remaining connected to the server after exiting is troubling....I also had that same problem Zam.

Personally, I would also be careful with ICQ. I would make sure that my settings and or firewall ensure ICQ always requests permission to communicate. I have no knowledge of any viruses using ICQ, however, we all know it is only a matter of time
