alienware cpu's?
never heard of them
basically you have 2 choices athlon or pentium
you have to make sure 1 that your botherboard supports the new cpu's
personally i am an athlon fan, usually cheaper and are as nice as intel. This is of course my opinion and I'm sure somebody will tell you intel is better.

well, AMD is a helluva lot cheaper than Intel and does statistically perform faster than some pentiums (e.g Athlon 2100+ at 1.73 ghz vs Pentium 1.8 ghz) but they get real hot, much hotter than Pentium chips. If you go Athlon, make sure that you keep your box cool. Pentiums tend to be more stable than Athlons as well.
I have an AMD and I haven't run into any problems but I think my next computer will be Pentium powered.

i have always had amd processors, just buy a couple extra fans and all will be fine.
but i think he actually means towers... in which case alienware makes a good one, but you will pay alot extra for their name... you can simply buy a motherboard and processor, then add gfx and sound, i recently did these same upgrades and did so for about 500 bucks... and that was for an athlon xp1700, geforce4 ti4200, and soundblaster audigy.... so the choice is yours!!

i always preferred intel series. although they are more expensive than amd, i go more for quality than price. the choice is ur though: price or quality

Another good person to talk to would be No Tact. He comes around here every now and then. Anyways, he makes computers and such so I'd assume he'd be a premo source for info :).

Go with Intel mate.
Trust me when I say....its worth the couple extra dollars.
Intel is more reliable....and least likely to burn up on ya.
Besides.....you wont need an air conditioning unit in your box to keep an Intel cool.

Jesus guys, i've never met another group of people that seem so eager to play "mines better than yours", grow up will ya? the guy asked advice, not to hear "amd suck" and "intel suck"
Iron, both chips are great, i use an athlon myself, admittedly i've got 6 fans in my pc and it sounds like a small plane taking off when it gets started, however i put up with this because I prefer AMD, Intel have great chips to, thats why they are the market leader, look on the bright side, at least IBM aren't still flogging their Cyrix chips, they were terrible lol

LOL! a "airplane" i anlo have 2 fans! man i cant belive you have 6!!! wow! well yeah thanks for the advice, but one question... is the Intel a tower?
DevilsPaw
11-13-2002, 05:05 PM
tower is only referring to the box, there's all different sizes. towers are the most popular. those are the ones you see most often. What everyone is talking about is the particular chip, the brain of the computer. the little thing that costs 200 bucks hehe

Man oh Man. Please do not attempt to do it your self before you read up on what you need to do. Subscribe to Maximum PC - www.maximumpc.com (http://www.maximumpc.com) . Search the internet for Build A Computer sites/articles. Join some tweaker geek forums like www.hardocp.com (http://www.hardocp.com) or www.mikhailtech.com (http://www.mikhailtech.com) forums and ask the geeks what you need to do. You will get more that you can use from them.
I will be building a rather nice gaming system for sale here soon. http://www.bac-clan.com/forum/images/smilies/ubb_import/thumbs.gif I will post when it is done.
Buy high end and dont skimp on the parts in the first place. Intel prices are coming down but so are AMD's. I would think either CPU format would be fine. Remember this guy is not an overclocker so extreme is not needed.
What system do you have now? Brand, speed, etc?
Would your current case be compativle with an ATX motherboard?
How much money do you have to spend for an upgrade?
What kind of performance do you need?
What components DVD, CDROM, CDRW, Storage Capacity, Graphics Ability, etc?
Of course if you have all kinds of cash then an even higher end system can be built. If you don't want to Do It Yourself (DIY) then go to www.voodoo.com, (http://www.voodoo.com,) www.abspc.com, (http://www.abspc.com,) www.theory.com (http://www.theory.com) or http://www.falcon-nw.com and have them do it all for you for a higher price. Alienware? Maybe?
You can build a nice screaming GAMING system for $ 876.99 + shipping and your own labor. All parts through www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com) one of the best resellers on the net and reliable. Fast shipping. Check www.resellerratings.com (http://www.resellerratings.com) for companies credibility before buying online.
Computer would consist of: (No Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, Monitor, Etc. Just the Tower)
