Can someone please tell me everything I need to know on how to install a second a hard drive. My primary hard drive only has like 2 or 3 gigs left on it and I would like to buy another one soon. I would like a 40.0 gig hard drive and for it to be an internal hard drive (looked for hard drives at pricewatch and saw some USB and FireWire hard drive so i guess those are external...)

Thanks<center>

nfg it very simple

most hardDrives will come with what we liek to call drivers........and now these drivers are used to install it.

the thing should also come with a handy-dandy notebook, like in blues clues, to help you throught the process of "instaling" this hardrive.

ok, you need to unscrew the panels off of your tower, and then there should be an empty port in the front. plug the drive in , and attach teh cables.
then run the driver installation CD/ its pretty easy.

ok you got most of it cometic.
you also need to set the jumpers on the back of it to be a slave drive. your paperwork from the drive will tell you how. then you have to go into your bios and make sure the appropriate settings are made so that your board will see it

Firewire / USB are mainly for off line storage or infrequently used data that dont demand speed as much. I personally recommend to install internal IDE harddrive since they are cheaper and faster than USB/fireware. Preferably SCSI ultra wide devices smilies/biggrin.gif but for most users IDE's are fine. Also if you still plan to get Firewire or USB these are their Performances through their serial cable..

USB 2.0 is 12mega-bits-per-second = 1.5mega bytes per second.

Firewire i400 is 400mega bits per second = 50megabytessec

also being that its serial data, its not as efficient as local IDE or SCSI drives.

in addition to these external devices (firewire/USB) you MUST download directx video capture/firewire/usb patch which can be downloaded from www.microsoft.com/directx. (http://www.microsoft.com/directx.) if you skip this step USB/Firewire or other similar devices will crash and corrupt data as data is read/written to it..

hope this helps.. smilies/biggrin.gif

MOST OF THE TIME WINDOWS WILL SET THE SECOND HDD TO D: AND MOVE THE CD TO E:, ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO DO IS RUN FDISK AND IT SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND IT AND FORMAT IT.... JUST MAKE SURE YOU DONT FORMAT YOUR PRIMARY HEHE
