DDR has the fastest speed right now...as far as I know...
But the difference is NOT substantial compared to SDRAM.
I say this because its only nano-seconds. I have 4 machines....2 have DDR...the other 2 have SD....I really dont see a difference. Maybe if you use HUGE applications you might...but I dont bog down my machines either...so...
LOL
Hope this helps.

my assesement of ddr....
my new pc has sdram or ddr compatability... when i bought it all i had was sdram. then i bought my ddr... the ddr is WAY faster. i say this because i used both on the same machine. load times with the ddr are half what they were with sdram!!

well.........I have used most of em i think.......

SDRAM is much slower than DDR ram. RDRAM is awesome also, but costs way too much....still
If you have a choice, always go with DDR ram. There are good motherboards out there that run DDR for both the P4 and Athalon,etc.

DDR comes in 3 current forms:
PC1600 = 200mhz buss
PC2400 = 266mhz buss
PC2700 = 333mhz buss
The differences between the 3 are obvious.

Note: Cheap DDR ram can overheat.........
Some cheap pc2400 DDR ram is really overclocked PC1600 DDR ram.
This makes it run very hot........which causes short lifespan
A key indicator is if the module has Cooling clamps on it, or requires them.

If the ram is designed to run at the speed it is labeled, it shouldnt need cooling clamps.
as an example, I purchased Samsung PC2700 (333mhz) DDR dimms for my motherboard. These dimms have no cooling clamps, and they dont need em.
There are several labels that sell PC2700 DDR dimms, only 2 or 3 dont require extra cooling....that is because the others are really selling pc2400 dimms overclocked to 333mhz.

if your comp is compatible with ddr, and you install it, and there is no difference.....well....you cant sue em for false advertising, cause it works.......

However, it means one of the following:
The motherboard sucks
The motherboard isnt set properly (jumpers or switches)
The motherboard requires an upgrade in CMOS
The motherboard CMOS isnt set properly.
Or...the motherboard accepts DDR Dimms but runs em at 133mhz buss anyway....which would be same as the first.....the mb sucks.
